The book that inspired the film.

I was lulled by THE LITTLE BUDDHA, the mysteriously familiar voice recounting the Jataka, the tale of Buddha’s birth. I heard him speak, and felt his kind, yet relentless intelligence. Giovanni Mastrangelo’s interpretation of the Sanskrit text invokes the call of Buddha, like a musical theme; it echoes the repentant words of Brahmin-speaking goats, and the Spirits of bearded trees. He tells this philosophical Buddhist parable almost like a child’s fairy tale. I imagine (not without envy) that young readers of LITTLE BUDDHA will experience their first, small, boundless Buddhist initiation
