Because You Smiled at Me

Author: Paola Calvetti

Nora is having a mid-life crisis. She is no longer certain that she loves her husband, her teenage daughter does not respect her, and she is unsatisfied with her job. When she discovers that her mother is dying, she decides to return home and assist her during her final, bedridden days. Nora’s visit home turns into a traumatic ordeal when she discovers a secret birth certificate, hidden under the keys of the family piano, that reveals that she has a twin sister. Nora’s shock at the possible discovery of a twin sister spurs her on a search for the truth in her past, and compels her to revisit a love affair that revolves around her lonely childhood. In this novel, told as a monologue interspersed with conversations and conflicts, Nora ultimately confronts her mother, demanding to know the truth. This book explores the ambiguity of mother-daughter relationships.
